Precise and approximate
Precise location aims at a smaller area than approximate location. Accuracy changes with signal sources, device, environment, and system behavior. A point shown on a map is an estimate, not proof that a particular person was there.
Apple's explanation of privacy and Location Services describes permission prompts, while-in-use and background access, precision controls, indicators, and inputs such as cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. It supports these iOS distinctions. It does not establish what one app collected or how another platform behaves.
Approximate location can serve weather, language, or regional content. Repeated samples combined with time can still reveal home, work, school, worship, or travel.
Foreground and background
Foreground access generally occurs while the app is visible or actively used under platform rules. Background access can continue when the app is not on screen. Some systems show reminders or indicators, and definitions vary by version.
A navigation or safety app may have a clear background function during a trip. A coupon app may not. Ask whether the function can begin through a user action and stop automatically when it ends.
Geotags
A geotag stores location with a photograph, video, note, post, or other item. The tag can travel when the file is copied, exported, backed up, or published. Some services strip it; others retain it. Confirm rather than assume.
Review metadata before sharing sensitive images. Also inspect visible landmarks, street signs, windows, badges, reflections, and repeated backgrounds because removing coordinates does not remove every location clue.
Location history
History is a retained sequence of places, times, routes, or visits. It can live in an app account, device backup, photograph library, map service, fitness platform, vehicle, carrier record, or shared family feature.
Turning off future history may pause new entries without deleting old ones. Use the account's history and deletion controls, and read what retained operational or legal records remain.

Google's current description of Android Location Accuracy explicitly separates the device service from per-app precise-location permission and explains that wireless signals, sensors, and emergency behavior can differ. It supports that distinction, not a universal result for every Android device or emergency system.
Pick the narrowest workable setting
For a one-time store lookup, enter a city or grant approximate access once. For a ride pickup, precise access while using the app may fit. For a recorded run, background access can be needed during the active workout, with an obvious stop.
Then review account history, sharing, recipients, retention, exports, and deletion. The permission prompt is the start of the decision, not the end.

Not always. The area size and repeated samples vary, and other signals can narrow it.
Can an app estimate location after permission is denied?
