Social media audiences compared: public posts, followers, close friends and groups
Public posts, follower feeds, close-friends lists, groups, direct messages and stories each expose content to a different set of people online.
What to take away
- Public posts, followers, close friends and groups each expose content to a different set of people, and the label is only the platform's intent.
- Followers, group members and chat participants can change after you post, so yesterday's narrow audience is not today's.
- Stories leave the ordinary audience view on a timer, but archives, reports and recipient copies can outlast it.
The six surfaces, side by side

Public posts
A public post on X, Reddit or a public YouTube video can reach signed-out visitors, search engines and followers. It also reaches strangers, recommendation systems and anyone handed a copied link. Comments and reactions push it further.
On X, a public post can be embedded on any site that allows it. Reddit threads are indexed and archived by third parties. YouTube public videos can be reuploaded or downloaded with common tools.
Post publicly when wide discovery is the point. Leave out contact details, live travel plans, private documents and anything about another person who has not agreed.
Followers and connections
On X, protected posts limit viewing to approved followers. TikTok Friends settings limit videos to people you follow back. Instagram accounts are either public or private; a private account approves each follower.
A mutual connection can expose more profile and network detail than a one-way follower does. Go through the list on a schedule. A real person can lose control of an account, change jobs or stop needing access. Open your followers list and remove people you no longer want.
Close friends and custom lists
Instagram Close Friends and Facebook lists narrow a post without a second account. The list works only while the membership is maintained.
On Instagram, set Close Friends through the story audience selector: tap the green circle or profile menu, then add people. Only you see the list, and they get a green ring around your story. On Facebook, create a custom list under Friends, then choose it in the post audience control.
Before posting to a list
- Open the list before posting
- Do not trust memory
- Drop former coworkers
- Drop ex-partners and old clients
- Remove dormant accounts
- A friendly name is not security
Facebook's own instructions for sharing with a specific list walk through choosing a named list in the post audience control. That covers Facebook's mechanics, nothing more. It does not show that a list member kept the post private. X has no close friends list. TikTok has Friends-only but no named subset.
Open the list before posting instead of trusting memory. Drop former coworkers, ex-partners, old clients and dormant accounts when they no longer belong. A friendly name is not a security control.
Groups
Facebook Groups, LinkedIn Groups and WhatsApp groups draw a boundary around a topic or an organization. Facebook Groups can be public or private, and private groups can be visible or hidden. LinkedIn Groups require an admin to approve your request to join.
WhatsApp groups are private to members and invitees, and admins can restrict who can send messages. In Facebook Groups, admins can set group history so new members see old posts, or limit it. Admins can change membership and some settings.
Check before sharing in a group
- Group typepublic, restricted, hidden
- Member list and churn
- Moderator powers
- Retention and group history
- Search visibility and file area
- Posted rules
Check the group type, member list, moderator powers, and retention. Also check search visibility, file area, and posted rules before you share. Workplace, health, school, political and support groups need extra care, because belonging to them is itself sensitive.
Direct messages
A direct message on Signal, WhatsApp or Instagram addresses named recipients, but a group thread can gain participants later. The provider processes message data under its own product and safety rules.
In Signal, you can set a group so only admins can add members. WhatsApp group admins can restrict who can edit group info or send messages. Instagram DMs have a message request folder and vanish mode.
Use end-to-end encryption where the service offers it and documents it accurately, and verify the people and devices as well. Check the participant list before sending.
Stories
A Snapchat Private Story or Instagram Close Friends story usually leaves the ordinary audience view after a set period. It can stay in personal archives unless you turn archiving off. A story's audience can also differ from the main feed's.
On Snapchat, a Private Story is set when you create the story: tap Send To, then New Private Story, and pick viewers. On Instagram, you choose Close Friends from the story audience selector; the green circle adds only that list. Instagram also keeps an archive of your stories unless you turn it off.
Set the audience for each sensitive story rather than relying on the default. Changing the default later does not change an item already posted. Check the viewer list before you post. A temporary story is not a reason to post a live home, school, clinic or travel location.
Visibility that reaches past the app
LinkedIn's help page on shared-post visibility separates Anyone, Connections only and Group audiences. It notes that public posts can surface in search, public profiles, follower feeds and sites outside LinkedIn. That describes LinkedIn's own settings, not a rule for X, Reddit, Instagram or TikTok.
A restricted visibility setting stops ordinary display. It does not stop screenshots, forwarding, quoting or a moderator reading the item.
Ask whether a public post can be embedded, indexed or shown in a partner service. A restricted feed setting may leave profile fields or older public activity untouched.
Common questions
Is followers-only the same as private?
No. It limits ordinary display under platform rules. Followers, provider systems, reports and later sharing still matter.
Can a new group member read old posts?
Sometimes. Group history rules vary by platform and by group settings. Check the current product and the group's own settings before you post.
Does a temporary story vanish from the platform?
Not necessarily. Archives and reports can persist after the display period ends.
Which audience is safest?
The smallest one that still does the job reduces exposure. Content sensitivity, participant trust, device security and persistence matter just as much.
